The young Mr. Boolchand Pessoomal left
his native shores of India in 1901 and
set sail for Panama in the Americas.
The voyage took him over three months.
When he finally landed in Panama, he
started working with his uncles in a
store in Colon. Those were the heady
days of the Panama Canal project, when
trade was brisk and attracted
entrepreneurs from all over the world.
In 1930, Boolchand was traveling to British Guyana (now known
as Guyana) in South America, when the ship made a bunkering
halt in the port of Willemstad, Curacao. Uneducated and
practically illiterate, young Boolchand, with meager savings
in his pockets, took the gut decision to set up shop in the Dutch
enclave. This was the beginning of a Family business.
Now, 75 years and three generations later, Boolchand's is one
of the most respected and reputed brands in the Caribbean.
With branches in Aruba, Curacao, St. Kitts, St. Maarten and
St. Thomas, Boolchand's is known and valued for providing high
quality merchandise and excellent service at competitive prices.
